i am from india, but i live in UK...
People speak just about every language, and every religion exists in India. I think there is something like 250+ languages, but the most common ones are Hindi, Tamil, Kannada, Telugu, Urdu, Panjabi, Gujrati, Sanskrit, Marathi etc... oh and ofcourse English! Again there are a lot of religions too most common ones being... Hinduism (note: hindu = religion, hindi = language) Islam, Christianity, Sikhism, Buddhism, Judaism etc...
yes you will people cover up more there, partly because of the muslim(a lot of them wear veils) people among indians, they like the women to cover up their whole body, and slits where the eyes are so they can see. but you will see lots wearing skirts, shorts, smallish tops (modern people, but many dont like them). You will be fine wearing jeans and t-shirts. just dont wear mini skirts and tiny tops on purpose. also a big NO is wearing bikinis on the beaches, people see that as just underwear in public.
Good luck, it is truely amazing there! the food is delicious! mmm... and lifestyle is "loud and friendly" dont worry you will be welcomed =). I would say that country sums up the world in one, because in north india (kashmir area) it is very cold just like UK often colder... but in Delhi(capital) it is boiling! and yu get the temperates in between too. Also the best beaches are in Goa... very nice!! and the food.. they have ots of different types of food there too! also you can stay in the nicest 5-star hotels which are beautiful, or it ranges up to even really cheap about 10p per day hotels aswell.
have fun, i am sure your trip will be great! it will be an unforgettable experience =)

We recently completed 5 months in India. I have to say that unlike many places I have visited I did not come away with a favourite place. The reason is that there are so many wonderful places and people that each place brought a new perspective and a new experience.
We started in the north (both NW and NE) as it was cooler in the Himalyan foothills. It is very tourist friendly and many Indian tourists vist these areas.
Many western tourists tend to keep to the western side and places in the state of Rajastan like Udaipur and Jaipur are worth visiting and have many western tourists. Further south you have places along the coast like Goa and Kerela. Probably best to go in the cooler periods.
There is a wide range of dress styles- beautiful saris etc- and the code is respectable but not extreme. Locals tend to cover up more than tourists but the more experienced travelers tend to cover legs and shoulders.
There is a wide variety of food and some places it is best to be careful about hygiene- eg street stalls- as you will not be accustomed to the local bugs.
My best advice is to get a copy of a book like Lonely Planets India and read to get your answers and ideas.
Don't be scared of India but be cautious as you would in any country. The big shock for those visiting India for the first time is the numbers of people, and often the pollution.
If you get to India and have a problem Indians are very courteous and will help but.... there are also many experienced scammers and touts who will lead you astray- so be careful of unwanted invitations to show you a travel agency, shops etc that you really don't want. Dont take risks you would not take in your local big city at home
If you go with an open mind, a cautious but friendly demeanor you should love India. At least I hope you enjoy as much as we did.

Buy or borrow the travel books published by Lonely Planet. There are India, South India, North India and some other editions. Very useful info. Answers most of your questions in short, clear form.
Being a female is not a problem if you follow the usual safety precautions that you would elsewhere. The Lonely Planet books mentions this point for lots of places - how safe, what to wear and relevant points about the locals/tourists at that place.
You may want to decide on which aspect of travel suits you - hiking, visting ancient sites, architecture - temples/Taj Mahal, beaches, mountaineering, just experiencing the country, focus on food....
and then you can plan more.

It's hot yes... though in winter, northern india that includes delhi gets kinda cold... There are many languages used in India, depending on where you are going though Hindi could be said as the official language.. Cover up.. not really... Indians are quite modern, even fashion wise but there's a limit to what you're wearing where... A different lifestyle.. well they're getting western all the time but culture.. diverse is word... Enjoy

Remember these points when you get to India:
*Keep a keen eye on your belongings when you travel. Especially your wallet/purse.
* You can get mugged or worse in any place in India even though Indians are warm, hospitable & friendly. Make sure you have a trustworthy companion if you venture outside your hotel after 7 pm.
* Do not give alms to any beggar. There'll be dozens on you immediately after you do so.
*Avoid eating at open-air roadside eateries. Most of them are unhygienic.
*Always bargain if you're buying stuff from the cheap places. You'll find the same item for half-the-price on the next lane. If the seller refuses to lower, walk away & he'll probably beg you to come back.
*Get precise directions if you set out on journeys by yourself unless you know Hindi, English(North India), English,Kannada,Tamil(South India). Get that right, many people in the south will refuse to converse in Hindi so better to use English down south.
*Get sun-screen lotion & mosquito repellent.
About covering up, you WILL get stared at whether you cover up or not. However, in the major cities specifically Mumbai,Bangalore, Delhi, Chandigarh, Pune you'd find Indian girls about as modestly dressed as anybody in LA or New York, make sure you don't wear anything transparent & you're good to go. If you hit the pub circuit in these cities, you will from necessity be showing quite some skin.
Heck, in some beaches in Goa, you'll find many women topless or in bikinis, so it varies.
My list of must-see places?
Delhi
Ladakh
Rajasthan(especially Udaipur)
Khajuraho
Mumbai (accompanied by Ajanta-Ellora caves)
Goa
Bangalore (though the pub culture has somewhat diminished)
Ooty,Coonoor
Kerala (suggestion: stay in Fort Cochin, you'll love it)
