i put a dell drive in my compaQ computer and when i start it up the word compaQ comes up.?

then the screen goes blank and a flashing line comes up in the top left corner ...it wont do anything else ..............what is the problem and how can i fix it.

check the jumper setting on the hard drive. see if it needs to be slave, master or cable select. next, you might need to check your bios setting for the dell hard drive.

The problem is Compaq has there own BIOS, it is looking for files on the hard drive that's not there and are not on Windows operating systems. That's why it won't work. If you look at another Compact Computer it shows two partitions on the drive the smaller about 5MB I think , that is where these files are.
If you can find a Compact recovery disk that's used for failed hard drives then it would work. Hope this helped.
