I want to generate more traffice to my website www.potenza-creations.com - I see that I should register with Shopping.com by way of cost per click - but how much will that cost me? I also found a company that says it will get me 30,000.00 hits for 89.99 - what is the most cost effective and best results? Thanks in advance.

First and foremost, you need to optimize your search relevancy as much as possible. Meaning, you have to get recognized and ranked as high as possible on search engines. The majority of site traffic directed to websites is directed by a search engine, and your site needs to be accessible and compatible by all search engines. Google is the largest (and supplies search results for a lot of other search engines) of course, followed by Yahoo! MSN, AOL, etc.

I took a look at your site and have a few comments:

Description Meta Tag: You don't have one, and you should. This tag displays a brief paragraph of information about your site in search results. Certain search engines (not Google though) use this meta tag in their search results. This is a must if you want people to click on your link in a search result.

Opening Paragraph: You should have an introduction paragraph to your site. Just the line "Designer Inspired Handbags and Fashion Jewelry" isn't enough. Google (and others) usually pull the first few lines of the first paragraph of your site as the description in search results. Also, the more text (and hence, more key words) on your site, the greater likelihood for ranking higher in search results. Your found by your keywords.

Keyword Meta Tag: You have 134 keywords listed in this meta tag, but most (larger) search engines ignore this tag and instead, search for keywords among the site's page contents. If you only have pictures on your pages, and no item descriptions (item titles are not enough, you should also describe your products), you have poor keyword usage, and hence, lower relevancy ranking in search results.

Robot Meta Tag: This tag is not really required but can help spiders to index the web page.

Inbound Links: Search Engines use inbound links as a determining factor for site relevancy to search queries. You need to get your site listed on as many other websites as possible. A good place to start are business directories. Many are free (such as Yahoo! Directory). Basically, the search engine thinks "if these other sites think this site is *important enough* to be listed, then it must be relevant to what people are searching for. Try to find not only generic business directories like Yahoo! Directory, but also directories for your particular type of business. Often times you can be listed for free in you link back to their site.

Overall Content: First impression of the website? It looks "homemade", and hence, not very "professional". You should have your personality expressed within the website (color scheme, design, graphics, etc), but at the same time acknowledge the fact that you're trying to appeal to a wide audience with differing tastes and styles. The background is a bit distracting, and when I look at the pictures, I don't know what I'm looking at (like I mentioned above; product titles are not enough). Product descriptions under each image tells the consumer what they're looking at, and use of descriptive phrasing ("sterling silver hand-crafted heart pendant encrusted with cubic zirconium hung on a delicate silver chain...") draws the viewer into the item and into the purchasing experience.

Also, you should define your target audience and adapt the site to that demographic. How would a husband go about shopping for his wife? How would a mother go about shopping for her daughter? If you were to look for your own site, how would you go about finding it?

This site is a great site for analyzing the strengths and weaknesses in your site design and is a good place to start for correcting the structure of your site.

Small Business Marketing Strategy: Target the up-and-coming search engines

While Google still rules the roost when it comes to Internet search engines, and Yahoo is firmly entrenched in second spot, a number of new start-ups are hoping to give them a run for their money. And a good small business marketing strategy would be to check them out and see how you can make them work for your site!

Some of the new up-and-comers include:

Powerset : ( www.powerset.com ) A "natural language" search engine

Hakia : ( www.hakia.com ) A "meaning-based" search engine

Wikia : ( www.wikia.com ) A "community-based" search engine

ChaCha : ( www.chacha.com ) A "social networking-based" search engine

Snap : ( www.snap.com ) A search engine that offers visual previews

It's a smart small business marketing strategy to continue optimizing for the Google, Yahoo, and MSN search engines as they are by far and away the most popular -- but niche search engines could provide new opportunities to reach your market. Be sure to check them out!
