i think it is different, depending on the individual,,,,,, for some, its having a child,,, for others, its betrayal in a relationship ,,,,, or it could be when you are able to see the world as it is, both good and bad, and yet keep a positive attitude,,,,,, what matures one person has almost no effect on another
for me, while i think i have matured over the years, my mother passing away really made a change in my life,,,,,, it matured me,,,, even though i was a grown up with a child of my own already , i took on the role of the oldest female

Positive contribution in life is our grow up. Work and relationship out of four u suggested are positive contribution either for u or for others. Suffers and Sadness or all type of other form of emotions are our under currant. Never choose to express these before society. Convert all your complaints in to quality questioning to transform unwanted emotions into desired workforce and warmness in relations. Best of luck.

I don't think it is work alone, because there are a lot of immature 40 year olds who have jobs.
I think taking responsibility for yourself and others is one step.
Suffering can bring maturity as you gain insight, empathy and patience.
Relationships can help you grow, but just as easily can keep you immature if the person does everything for you.
Sadness just usually makes us focus on ourselves...but everyone gets sad sometimes.

Good question. I think its more varied your experiences are the more quickly you 'grow up' Then again we need to know what 'growing up ' means. Does it loss of innocence ?

We grow quickly because when we were young, we wished to grow older. That "wish" comes true, and with startling speed. It is one of many great ironies I have dealt with in life.

all of the above but the one thing that made me grow up quickly was betrayal of a true friendship.
