Which place are you from?In Nashik the cost is Rs 3 daily and Rs 5 on Sunday. In Bombay its Rs 4 daily.
It costs more on Sunday because it contains more advertizing, therefore more pages, also a little more articles. The same news printed in the Bombay paper on Sunday will be dated Monday in our edition paper except for the main news. This is because its rolled off the press early so as to reach us by morning.

Sunday is the time when every one feels like relaxing at home especially the elderly people who do not party out on week ends. Many of them find more time to devote to reading and hence every newspaper carried more pages on topics of every day interest, health, wealth, entertainment etc. Some of them also include more pages for glossy gossip and also something for the children. Hence to cater to the different needs of every section and to carry more pages on a Sunday the newspapers are costilier on Sundays than on weekdays.

newspapers can be bought by two means; by monthly subscription
and over newspaper stands. Many financial newspapers are bought
mostly by office goers who have to cross at least a news paper stand from where they can buy, without subscribing. Those financial magazines carry Stock Market quotations which will not be available on Sundays&Mondays[since Saturdays and Sundays are holidays for the exchange] Hence Sunday editions and some papers of Monday editions are not bought by them thereby avoiding EXPENSIVE editions in which they are not interested. So
as a compensatory pricing, they are expensive and it is being born
only by the SUBSCRIBERS![Here I do not mean readers who enjoy
those editions]

The sunday paper usually has a recap of the past weeks news, more special sections ie: travel, entertainment, book review, magazine, real estate, etc. and the sales circulars. The NY Times is $1 during the week and $3.50 on sundays

If they used the same amount of paper, the same amount of ink, the same number of typesetters and so on and so on, they would cost the same. However, if you look closely, you might notice that your Sunday paper is a little thicker than the weekday paper. Why does a quart of cream cost less than a gallon of cream?
