This is what I found when I searched for the word on wikipedia.
Shinobi (忍び) is a term for a ninja Those who follow the path of a shinobi generally end up facing or have faced lonliness. Those who embark on the journey to be a top ninja, has to do many tasks that force them to follow the path alone. The tasks include finding the spirit beast or creature that is within, becoming 'one' with many of natures forces eg/ wind. These tasks are important because when the shinobi has finished all these tasks then they can finally be excepted truly. . It may also refer to:
Shinobi (arcade game), the original video game developed by Sega
Shinobi (PlayStation 2), the PlayStation 2 sequel.
Shinobi (series), a series of video games following on from the original
Shinobi: Heart Under Blade, a Japanese film
An enemy in the MMORPG Ragnarok Online
Professional wrestler Allen Sarven, who used "Shinobi" as one of his ring names.
A term used in the movie DOA: Dead or Alive referring to an outcast ninja who betrays its clan.

"Shinobi is a term often associated with ninjas of ancient Japan. It really means stealing (into), a spy, a sneaking thief, or a surreptitious visit to a house of ill repute. Though sometimes used to refer to an outcast ninja.
This term was somehow given a better report when various video games, TV series, and even a movie came out with this Shinobi title.
These character are sometimes Romanized as two words: Shin obi, or Shin-obi."

I believe Shinobi is "Proper" term for Ninja, or something related to it, but I could be wrong.
