Being female, the first thing I see is a mechanic poking around my car with a screwdriver. The last guy I used was getting ready to jam one into my brake fluid reservoir and I quickly covered it with my hand and told him, "Don't even try it!" I feel like they are breaking one thing while they're fixing the other so I'll have to come back and pay more money. God forbid they should find out you make a decent wage. How can I find one I can trust?

#1... Ask for credentials. If they spent time studing and keeping up to date, that is a start.

#2. Do they look you in the eye whenb you have a specfici question.

#3. Are they willing to release information and "counsel you" when you have a specfic concern.

#4. Where they reffered.

I have been doing this all my life. I am 3rd generation automotive technician; however, the cars of today are not my fathers Oldsmobile. I spend no less than 6 hours a week reading and updating myself on newer technology, furthermore, my team also takes the ASE exams each re cert period, and study for them...Info changes.

Don't be a victim. Ask questions, and PLEASE, do not hit the shop with the rip off scenario. If it is a good one, they will show you the door. I know for a fact, I am too busy to deal with the, I'm not going to get rip offed people. Let my parking lot speak for itself.

Hope I could help.

I am a mechanic, working mechanics, my whole life.

for the criminal act of a few ,we all get bad reputation.

my best advice(Your best choice) buy the service manual of YOUR car and read it.plus learn about O.B.D. codes(Internet for free)
so, next time You will know 100% what repair the mechanic is doing and how much You gonna pay.
You will not be blind.

one of the reasons that a criminal posing as a mechanic can't overcharge You is Your Knowledge

far more, chances are ,one day You will know.,if the guy in front of You is a mechanic or not.

References. Find other people who have had work done. Your mechanic should be more than willing to provide a list of his satisfied customers. Always get a second opinion. A mechanic should not have a problem with you getting a second opinion as long as he's not trying to rob you.
