The second amendment helps to ensure that individual freedoms will continue. Individual ownership of firearms spreads the military might among the people, and not just the government. Thus limiting our own government from becoming totalitarian as well as making it more difficult for an invading army to conquer this country, should our government fail us.

Wow, so the WHOLE Constitution is contained in the Second Amendment? And you know that EVERY liberal is against the Second Amendment?
You're REALLY smart.

Allow me to change the wording of your query to lend it some truth and relevance: Why do NEOCONS hate the constitution? Illegal wire-tapping, war based on dubious intelligence that seems to be everyone's fault but their own, suspension of Habeas corpus... evidently the constitution isn't a set of rules, so much as polite suggestions to be to be casually ignored at one's discretion.

Same reason neo-cons hate the First, Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, Eighth, and Tenth Amendments--it prohibits them from doing whatever they want.

Why is that the only amendment that cons care about.
It seems to be the only one they read. Liberals on the other hand have read the entire document so you see, the entire premise of your question is flawed.

So, you don't mind if Republicans need to microchip all firearms and have a national ID card in this post 9-11 world?

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't it Bush who hates the Constitution. He calls it a "damn piece of paper". Does warrant less wiretapping sound familiar. Are you willing to give up your right to privacy?

29. Discredit the American Constitution by calling it inadequate, old-fashioned, out of step with modern needs, a hindrance to cooperation between nations on a worldwide basis.

Because the Constitution is there to limit the powers of the government. That is the antithesis of what they stand for.
