first of all if this is not a brand new ipod it may have been formatted previously for the wrong platform. Ipods formatted for Mac's will not show up on a Windows PC however a PC formatted iPod will normally work on a Mac and a PC.

Check out this site link below. Click on your iPod model this is a terrific site for solving problems!!

Unless your iPod contains music that you do not have elsewhere (hard disk, CD etc) it would be a good idea to reset the iPod and if that still does not work re-install the software on the iPod (instructions on site link below)

Once it is working properly it will show in iTunes within a few seconds of it being plugged into your computer. You may then configure iTunes to download whatever you want.

On your start menu (PC) go to programmes then find the iTunes icon.
On your Mac iTunes is normally already on your dock. So just click on it to start it up.

I think that you are gonna have to restore it, the same thing happened to me some months ago with my ipod video and I restored it and then the computer recognized it again. BUT WHEN YOU RESTORE IT YOU HAVE TO BACKUP ALL THE FILES ON YOUR IPOD LIKE MUSIC, VIDEOS OR PHOTOS BECAUSE THEY WILL BE DELETED FROM YOUR IPOD. To restore it do the folllowing: Plug your ipod to your computer
Click start on your pc
then all programs
ipod update
When you click ipod update a window will appear, click where it says restore ipod to factory settings.
Hope this helps.

Try plugging it in to a different USB port. If that doesn't work, then try restarting your Ipod (if it's a video or nano). Hold down the menu ans the middle button until your screen goes dark, then try to plug it in.

That happened to me once. Then, I realized I left the speakers in my car and I had the wrong wire! I was laughing at my Ipod. :) Hope this helps! Also, if its not new, it could
proabaly formated previously for the wrong platform.
