Catcher in the Rye is incredible. Not necessarily set "in" a high school, but it is revealing in terms of the high school psyche.

What about "Twilight"? It's about this boy and a girl who see each other in high school, but the boy is a vampire. There's also "Blue Bloods" which is about these teens who are vampires. It's kind of interesting...and they go to a high school. It seems a lot of high school stories are really trashy ("Blue Bloods" is kind of), which really bugs me, but I bet if you look hard enough, you'll find some not-so-trashy ones. "Fat Kid Rules the World" is really good too. It's not really gothic-y or romance-y, more punk rock-ish, but it's HILARIOUS. It's about a fat kid (17) who meets the legendary high school dropout who is looking for a drummer for his punk rock band. It doesn't sound very interesting here, with me describing it, but it's pretty great. =D

If you like romance than you should read Jason and Kyra by Dana Davidson, it's set in high school, and has a drama of a soap opera, but is extremely realistic.

A Great and Terrible Beauty.
it's set in a boarding school and it's kinda fantasy-ish but a good deal of romance too. it's a good one.

Read Freedom Writer's Diary. It is about these high schoolers in the ghetto who write bout their experiences. It's actually a true story, believe it or not.
