The betta is about all it can handle. A very generalized rule of thumb 1 gallon for every one inch of body.

Only one male beta in that tank. Anymore would be overload. Sorry I know this is not what you wanted to hear. If you want to keep more fish get another set up like you have and keep another male betta in it. If you sit the bowls close together the bettas will put on a show for you! I don't think its so stressful for them, they get to be bettas and get some exercise, but do make sure you turn out the lights everyday so they can sleep and not see each other all the time.

magicman and something are right, everybody else is wrong.
"One inch per gallon" is a myth, especially if the tank is very small. A 2 1/2 gallon tank is suitable for one small fish. The only feasible way to get another fish in there is to make sure it occupies an entirely separate ecological niche. So you could get a betta and a cory cat, because one hangs out on the bottom, and the other hangs out near the top.

In a tank that small a betta isn't going to be friendly with the other fish. Also I wouldn't put more than 2-3 fish in that tank anyway. I have read you can add an african dwarf frog to the tank and it will be fine with the ebtta.

The general rule of thumb is 1 inch of fish per 1 gallon of water. If you really want another fish, I would suggest upgrading your aquarium.

Generally it's 1 fish per gallon tank. So technically you should only have 2 fish in your tank. Betta's are aggressive fish, keep this in mind.
