Hubby and I were watching the telly last night and an advert for these plug in, light up all singing and dancing air fresheners came on.

Amid comments like 'what on earth?' and 'why would you want a light?' hubby noted that he thought we were supposed to be lowering carbon emmissions-hence the new tax on cars-and it seemed ridiculous that hundreds of millions of households are plugging in let's say 3 or 4 air fresheners each completely unhindered by government policy.

Just out of interest how many of you guys have them(not necessarily with lights) and what are your thoughts-especially if you're keen to be green!

This was really an off hand remark that got me thinking-but I suppose sarcasm is a little lost in text!

I never even thought of this-thanks for bringing it to everyone's attention! I'm against all air fresheners personally. The plastic ones are wasting plastic resources-which won't degrade easily and the sprays apparantly contain mild carcinogens (cancer causing agents).

Personally I try to find the cause of the smell and eradicate it ie smelly shoes get chucked outside lol. I also like to open windows to air out the house.

They are awful things. My mum used to buy those and everytime i went round i would either be sick, fall asleep or have a chronic headache. My mum had the same symptoms and so did her partner. We couldnt put our finger on what was causing this. She even called out the boiler and gas inspection people as she was convinced it could be carbon monoxide fumes. It was that man who told her the gas was fine and asked whether she had any of those plug in air fresheners. He said lots of households were having the same symptoms. It seems like not only are they dangerous for the environment, they are dangerous to people too!

We have a couple in our house, but we think the majority of them are awful. As regards to lowering carbon emissions they , the powers that be, Im afraid have a long way to go before Im convinced. Just to-day Prince Charles got on a train at Waterloo Station to make a 30 mile journey whilst his car made the same journey just to pick him up at the other end. Doh. As they say "You can fool some of the people some of the time but you cant fool all the people all of the time."

I don't know about 'green' but just imagine the damage to the atmosphere when the house catches fire ..... as it will. Those things are terribly dangerous. I know somebody who is in the fire service and he told me this.
It is much safer to open a window and let fresh air in, it's more effective and it's free!

I agree, it's a waste of electricity, surely! There are many other more environmentally friendly ways to keep your home smelling nice, like keeping it clean, burning essential oils and opening the windows!

I hate those things, they smell so artificial and like i've just finished cleaning a toilet - i prefer burning incense, or better yet leaving the window open for fresh air!

I used to have a couple of plug-ins, but discarded them. They simply don't do anything! I now use scented oil warmers with tea lights, as before.

What`s wrong in opening a window? these things only mask nasty smells they don`t make them go away. I would never waste my money on them.
