Hello filthboy

The clicking noise that you are referring to is known as popping. The most common causes are:

Playing bad quality music
Play music on poor quality speakers
Using Damaged speakers

Sadly over time speakers do give in and tend to produce such popping noises. This is normally caused with age of speakers, such as dust gathering, or simply the fact that you have been playing audio too loud of the speakers to cope.

I highly doubt that updating your sound drivers will resolve the issue.

My advise, think about getting new speakers / fixed speakers and keep to volume down for now to reduce the occurrence of popping.

The only other causes that I am aware of is:

Radio and Wireless Signal interference
Having wireless systems and blue tooth devices tend to distrupt the waves that the units of certain speakers pick up.

I hope this helps.

Does the same music produce the same effect on another computer. Does it do it for official music CDs you bought in stores? Sometimes downloaded mp3s are corrupted a bit on purpose to discourage downloading. But if it happening to everything it could be another problem.

It can also be a more complicated reason. You did not give any system specs, and that makes a question more difficult. Try to
search around for keywords "PCI" and "latency".
I once solve my clicking sounds the same way.
