Simply put...........to supposedly create autonomy for the child. An unusual name tends to be remembered.....while using the old standards (John, Jane, Bob) are easily forgotten.
I knew a girl once........she grew up with the name Jane (became Lear after she married). When she had her first daughter, she wanted to make sure that her child would stand out. She also wanted to find something that would fit well with her last name.........so she chose (and NO, I'm not making this up) Crystal Shanda.
Crystal Shanda Lear. Say it all together, and please don't groan out loud if you can help it. I have always felt so sorry for that child, I really have.

I suppose 'you say potato'!?! One parents ridiculous name is another parents wonderful name. Your choice and picks may not be satisfactory with others. I prefer names that are unique, I can't stand names like Josh, James, Albert, Zach, etc....
It is a parents right and choice to choose a name befitting their child. If at some point in that child's life they feel they can absolutely NOT live with the name chosen for them, they should change it. But think about this..If you have a child and you struggle for days and even months with a name that will allow your wonderful child to be an individual and unique, would you want them to change it? It should be a name chosen with love and not in haste. So if you meet someone with a name you find offensive or silly, remember that your child's name may bring the same feelings out in someone else.
This is one of the reasons I love this world we live in. Individuality!!
Now, I must admit that I would not like to hear the name 'Froggy' or 'Fetter Head'! I would probably have to slap their parents! lol
Good Luck
Blessed Be

Roberta - you shouldn't say that people who give their children ridiculous names don't deserve children. That's just crazy talk.
I think the ridiculous names come from thinking that their child is a special and unique snowflake, (fight club quote... couldn't resist). They think that their child can own up to and live up to their special unique name because they're special and unique. I know what you're saying... the thing that bugs me the most is crazy spellings. Like Emmalee, or Elizzabeth... crazy stuff like that. And names like Shaniqua or Shimmery or whatever are retarded.
Anyways - I knew that I wanted something different and unique for my daughter cause she really is a special and unique snowflake, (so kidding), but I wanted it to sound normal too... not strange. I came up with Raysa, (RAY-sah). I've heard it before but most people haven't. Does that qualify as a ridiculous name? :)

The other day at work,a former co-worker came in with her 2 yr old girl,i asked her what her name was and she said her name is Jazariah.Yes,it's different, but i like names that are different as well as the "usual" names. It's not the child's name for the reason children get picked and bullied at school,it's that parent's raise their children TO BE bullies and anusholes! My name is Kim,and i was picked and tormented by many classmates because i was short and small and because i was different(not in the homosexual sense).Bullies naturally pick on people whom they feel they can get away with it and they are TAUGHT to be bullies FROM THE HOME.A child's name is NOT always the reason children get picked on.Parent's at an early age should instill PRIDE to their child for their name and to tell their children that their name is precious and to stand up to bullies, and be PROUD of their name,no matter what others say.

I often wondered why my parents hated me enough to give me the awful name they did! Not bad enough that my first name is ridiculous, the middle name is just as bad!
Parents seem to forget that their babies will grow up to be people. They'll have to live with these names thru their adulthood. How do you suppose "Ima Hogg" and "Egbert Bacon" got thru their lives? Yes, these are real names. Given by stupid parents.

i am pretty sure the parents do not think the names they give their children are stupid or ridiculous because if they did, they would not name them that. most of the times it is simply a cultural name or a name that is popular in that time frame.
the 50ies was betty jean, betty may, mary ann, mary louise, and such.
the 80ties was brittany, bethany,
the 90ties, cody, diamond, jasmine and so forth, people like what they like and just because you don't like it does not mean it is ridiculous.

its pretty stupid that they name their kids weird names. they spend too much time thinking of something unique that they forget the problems that the child might have with bullying in the future because their name is different to everyone elses. like, up until a few years ago i was the only person at my school with the name Courtney. So i had a hard time because no1 had heard of the name b4. it was so sad, people were always calling me Wart-ney or Fart-ney or something really dumb but it was just horrible having every1 focus on your name like that.

To make the child stand out. i worked in the child support field and some of the names were way out there, but when the child comes home crying because the child is being teased only the parents have to answer for it.

confident, it is going to be banned. you're able to on no account provide your baby a acceptance you does not choose for your self. Silliest names i've got ever heard comprise - memory, Clamidia (this is the way it became spelled), Fagina (rhymed with "vagina") woman, and Dreek (it became meant to be "Derek" however the mum did no longer understand a thank you to right spell the call). Edit: I want i became joking approximately any of those names, yet regrettably they're all genuine. those damaging infants.

I don't know, perhaps they are family names or the name of someone precious to the parent.
I stuck with plain ole Biblical names lol, good solid ones, named after powerful women I admire.
