The answers you already got are really good advice.
It is wonderful to have a person so linked to his family which as you say is large. Join them whole heartedly and try not to be a Judging onlooker for the guy. Develop your own relationship with the family, not just through him.
About him having to check on everything with his family first, is nothing to do with you. Be frank and uninhibited in giving your opinion on everything he asks from you. So What if he consults his mother / family too as long as they are not giving him wrong or foolish advice.

It's obvious that you come from a small and not particularly loving family. Once you are accepted you will find that you will want to call and talk with all family members. Love within the family means that love can be given outside of the family.

In all honesty, don't you want someone with a good family relationship? I mean really, If a guy is good to his Mom, gramma, and sister, wouldn't it make sense that he knows how to act around women?
Letting his mom know about your sex life would be a problem and discussing personal issues with family is not good, but I see nothing wrong with having a close knit extended family. I come from one myself. Our family vacations have always been to visit family. It helped me to know where I came rom when times got tough.

Its sickness when he phones in for everything, I mean every little thing, otherwise it depends, his age, etc. You don't want to get involved with anyone that lets the family do his thinking. You will never have a life separate from them, its tough and they don't change, the family tries to change you also, that is if your excepted to begin with. .. beware if this is the case with you...walk away...
