Actually they are not looked down upon by most ....just the gender feminist whose goal is to destroy marriage.

"Since marriage constitutes slavery for women, it is clear that the women's movement must concentrate on attacking this institution. Freedom for women cannot be won without the abolition of marriage." (radial feminist leader Sheila Cronan).

"Being a housewife is an illegitimate profession... The choice to serve and be protected and plan towards being a family-maker is a choice that shouldn't be. The heart of radical feminism is to change that." (Vivian Gornick, feminist author, University of Illinois, "The Daily Illini," April
25, 1981.

"Marriage has existed for the benefit of men; and has been a legally sanctioned method of control over women... We must work to destroy it. The end of the institution of marriage is a necessary condition for the liberation of women. Therefore it is important for us to encourage women to leave their husbands and not to live individually with men... All of history must be re-written in terms of oppression of women. We must go back to ancient female religions like witchcraft." (from "The Declaration of Feminism," November 1971).

The most merciful thing a large family can do to one of its infant members is to kill it." (Margaret Sanger, founder of Planned Parenthood, in "Women and the New Rage," p.67.

Because they are dependent upon their husbands for support, and feminists believe that is "bad". In fact, feminists don't believe women should have children at all, instead they should fulfill their lives with a "career" instead.

Fortunately for us, all those feminists that don't have children and substitute instead a career that rants about this cause or that? They don't pass on their genes for feminism or ranting.

The high point in any woman's life is giving birth. If you don't think so, just ask them and they will recount every detail of the birth of their children in exquisite detail.

During pregnancy and childbirth, a woman is very dependent, and there is just no way around this factoid. And after birth, many women decide raising junior is a lot more rewarding than attending one more business meeting where either nothing gets decided, or people are just out to hurt each other in clever ways.

It is only within the last 40 years or so in America that machines, disposable diapers, and white collar work have made it possible for women to work outside the home in a career other than teaching or nursing.

Before then, the time-honored strategy was to marry well, (someone with property) and pop out heirs and farmhands.

In these good old days, the roles were very clear, the woman called all the shots inside the home and in matters related to reproduction, and the men handled everything else.

Any questions?

The best answerer in the Women's Studies section blames everything on men and patriarchy? No way. Just proves best answerers aren't right, they just tell the askers what they want to hear.

Anyway it is the feminist movement that has made this happen. Am I insulting the whole movement? No, but all its effects weren't good. Women were expected to be housewives. The feminist movement just flipped this around so it is the opposite and women need a career. Neither idea is right. Women should be respected in whichever one they choose, at the same time they shouldn't decide to do both and have their kids grow up in daycare.

Women and men are looked down upon if they stay home and there rarely is a stay at home parent anymore. Because of this kids aren't getting the attention they need as they grow up.

Because many people consider it to not be a real job. This is of course not true. Think about it, what do housewives do and what are their responsibilities? I realise some husbands help but I dont know many who do alot of the work unfortunately.

1. Clean the house.
2. Cook meals.
3. Laundry Service.
4. Child care(sometimes even teach home school.)
5. Financial planner
6. Chauffeur children to sports and other activities.
7. Personal shopper for groceries and clothing.

Some housewives even have part or full time jobs to help cover household expenses. For the last 8 mos, my husband has been looking for work and Ive been working full time hours. He watches our child, but Im still in charge of all the cooking, cleaning , and child care when Im home.

Housewives that do all the things Ive listed and more should not be looked down on, they should be praised. Being a housewife, especially with very little help is one of the hardest jobs out there.

Please any housewives out there, it is Saturday, please do something nice for yourself, you deserve it.

This is an attitude that needs to change.

I noticed a lot of answers to both of your questions supporting and applying great value to the role of housewife/mother. I wonder if these opinions are representative of the majority of Americans, and perhaps the de-valuing of being a housewife is perpetuated by a very vocal minority?

Just the word "housewife" carries a negative connotation in my mind, due to lifelong conditioning. I prefer the word "homemaker" as it implies more emotional nurturing, whereas "housewife" implies one who is simply a servant to perform household chores.

I look forward to the day when being a homemaker is attributed the same value as any other career choice.

Alexandra, I believe you have taken Betty Friedan's use of the work "leech" out of context. Finger pointing does not further your cause. It only exacerbates already polarized views.

Because most people think that all women should be working in careers and think it's 1940s if a woman decides to depend on her husband to provide for her and the children. They don't realize that being a housewife and stay at home is a job as well.

This is a result of patriarchy and the fact that men always perceive anything women do as demeaning or worthless. Feminism believes that women should not only have the choice of staying home and raising their children but also be recognized for this valuable service. Instead they are penalized by not paying into a pension plan or given any renumeration. To me raising children is the most important career in the world.

Because the feminist nazis don't see it as being "acceptable", despite the fact that raising children and taking care of the house is just a respectable of a job, and just as hard work, as winning the dough.

The feminist movement has certainly left its mark! They should never be. Raising children is the greatest and most difficult job in the world today. Our kids would have far fewer problems if Mom's would stay homeand care for them.
