In the financial world, a "prospectus" is just a full disclosure about a company that sells securities for investment.
Financial investments give a return that is proportional to the risk involved. Sometimes they are as risky as salvaging treasure, and the prospectus makes it REALLY REALLY clear that the investor is likely to lose money in these cases.
So when a customer loses money, the company points to the prospectus and says, go ahead and sue, but we fully disclosed everything and good luck in court.
That is why they always say read the prospectus, not that they really care that you do, but to make sure you have no case if things go sour.
