The term "fundamentalism" was originally an ultra-conservative reaction to the rise of the theory of Evolution, so it's always been radical. By insisting on a strictly literal interpretation of the Bible, they determined half a dozen "fundamental" doctrines they wouldn't compromise on. That's where the word came from.
