I have two dogs. One is a three year old female-black lab/bulldog mix and the other is a one year old male-black lab/mutt. They are not related. I have noticed that both of them make strange, jerking movements in their sleep and sometimes whine in their sleep. They also appear to have REM. I also have an American Shorthair cat, female-age unknown who exhibits some of the same sleeping behaviors. Is there any scientific proof that aminals dream or any proof that they don't? If they don't, what is causing the strange behaviors when they sleep?

I'm sure they dream. My dog does that same thing. He whines, howls, sorta barks, moves his paws like he's running, and jerks in his sleep. So cute!

Yes, Dogs dream. They dream and cry in their sleep. If they been spanked or mistreated. They remember and sometimes dream about their bad experiences. It is an emotional trama. I wake mine up and hug them, and tell them it is ok that they are safe and that I'm here. They dream less about the things that happen to them in life when they feel safe and protected in their sleep. You not just a dog owner. You have replaced his mother and its up to you to raise them and make them feel safe in a protected enviroment the same as their own mother would if she still had them. I rescued my dog and he had bad things happen to him while he was a stay. He is a wonderful border collie I adore. Sometimes his little feet just run and run in his sleep. But he is dreaming of the runs we take in the field so I let him sleep. I wake him only when he wines. Dogs never forget what happens to them. Just like you. When parents are unfair or hurt you it stays with you. Same as all pets. Good luck. Just give them extra love and reassurance when you wake them. It will slowly go away.

Animals are just like us, which means yes, they do dream. A dog might dream of strange creatures he saw or running for a squirrel wich causes the jerking movements.

Dogs do, in fact, dream. Many people observe their dogs twitching, moving their legs or making noises while sleeping and this is typically because they are dreaming. In fact, though dogs tend to dream for shorter periods of time than people, they tend to do so with more action. You can see dogs making chewing motions, licking or moving their lips and whiskers while dreaming, moving their feet and legs like they're running, and even making yipping noises.
