First is the car in good shape if so expect to pay 750.00 to 1000.00 .make sure they clear the cooling system. You may think about a reman motor if the head is damaged the cost depending on which motor you have 3000.00 to 4000.00. Still cheaper than a car payment much more reliable than a junk yard motor. Ive used jasper motors with very little problem over the last 5 years and the warranty is very good.

I am not clear about the coolant. If there are external leaks they have to be repaired before you can go any farther. Once the leaks are repaired the question is whether it is still losing coolant. If so, it may be a bad head gasket and a chemical "block test" will confirm it. If not, the head gasket is not bad. What make, model, and year is this car, and how many cylinders? For instance GM V6s and V8s made since 1996 are susceptible to intake manifold gasket leaks that can imitate a bad head gasket. EDIT - with the Civic it is simple enough to test for a head gasket problem. With the engine cold, remove the radiator cap, start the engine, pinch closed the hose to the reservoir and put the palm of your hand on the radiator neck where the cap was. If you feel steadily rising pressure within 5 seconds that is bad news for the head gasket, if not you can be sure the head gasket is good. With the coolant being pushed into the reservoir I strongly suspect the radiator cap is bad. A new OEM (never aftermarket) radiator cap is indicated. I have great doubts the head gasket is bad - you would almost certainly see coolant disappearing - not spilling - every day if it were bad.

If the car is costing you too much to maintain get rid of it. I would rather have a truck payment and not have to worry about being stranded on the side of the road

i have a 2000 expedition that i was told needed the same thing. take it back to the dealership first and you might get a different answer. my est $1200 repair was fixed by a 30 cent clamp

wow, its a tough one all right, well what i would do is to weigh up the cost between the repairs and the cost of a better motor, and how much scrap value for the old one, do your figures and you will make the right decision best of luck

its not cheap,but neither is a new car.basicaly it's you call,is the car worth it to you,if the head is good,probubly about 300. to 600.to fix at a shop,alot less if you can do it yourself ofcourse.
