Peanut butter.
Think about it. What could they want more. They can eat it, play with it, do art with it, throw it on friends, or just mash it between their fingers on a nice summer day.

Here's something creative that will be appreciated and you will have fun doing:
Make up a crossword puzzle and have all the hints be personal inside moments and jokes that only you two would know about. Put it on a poster board and add some clipart and some pictures to it!
The crossword puzzle could be time consuming and a bit frustrating ... you could do the same idea with a WORDSEARCH or WORDFIND puzzle.
Put your computer skills to work! Use Excel, get clipart from Yahoo Images Search, copy them, and reformat them, use a gluestick to put on posterboard.
Use graph paper, and pictures from magazines if you are not as good on the computer, and it will give it a homemade feeling.

This is assuming that you're a parent or older sibling:
I suggest getting something active like a new bike (depending on where you live), or as that other chap said, a musical instrument - they'll never tire of these.
Alternatively, kids that age would much rather spend time with you than any amount of material gifts, therefore I suggest taking them somewhere special. If it's a boy, something like a sporting or motor-racing event perhaps. For girls, something equivalent depending on what their interests are. It doesn't matter, as long as it's quality time.

why don't you just take them out for dinner and then take them to the mall. tell them that you can go where ever you want and pick something out ( within a price range) it was a fun gift for me when i was 11
