Poverty in Jamaica is, indeed, very dire. Many people there live in huts made of discarded boards and similar materials. It has the effect of bringing great desperation to the people and higher crime rates is one result. Those who have jobs are required to work long hours under bad conditions. However, the Jamaican people are happy and friendly.
