Because it's an Aussie icon and it tastes so great! Not to mention it comes in curries, chicken... And it's you can zap it for a few seconds and Presto you have a great tasting, beaut meal in a Pie.

If you are referring to the pastry (pie), I'm not sure that I agree with you. Other pastries and certainly many other foods rank very high on my personal "Most Important" list.
On the other hand, if you are talking about Psi sometimes spelled Pi) - the arithmetical value - then many consider it important because it shows up in so many relationships in the world, and is crucial to solving and understanding a tremendous number of mathematical relationships

Google search 'Weebl and Bob' for a cartoon that will explain to you why pie is so great. There are lots of episodes but you want to watch the first one, suitably title, 'Pie'

It's a combination of nature's candy (fruit) and good healthy grain (crust) and ofcourse the man made element that adds the punch - sugar.
