My pediatrician told me that what you eat is in your breastmilk in 6 hours. He said that if I eat something bad, plan on pumping and throwing it away in 6 hours. That is the rule of thumb I use and it works great for my twins!

It depends on what the food or beverage is. Most foods take 12-24 hours to reach breastmilk. Some things, like alcohol, are freely permeable and pass thru to breast milk immediately.

It takes but minutes. Garlic is an excellent example. Have your husband smell a small sample of your milk. Then eat a small amount of garlic. Fifteen minutes later, have him smell a new sample of your milk. He'll be able to smell the garlic!

I don't know scientifically, but my wife always said that within 24 hours of her eating something that gave her constipation or the runs, the kids had the same reaction.
