On December 31 2006, the LV room inventory stood at 132,605 these numbers come from http://www.lvcva.com and LV is approaching 40 million visitors per year. Occupancy rates in LV are generally very high, if the casinos have to give the rooms away to fill them they will. If they can charge a fortune because of some special event, convention, weekend or holiday they will. But the major resort hotels(almost) never fill to 100% occupancy they always keep a few rooms in reserve just in case a "Whale" decides to stop in town and drop some major bucks at the tables.
I worked for two of the largest gaming corporations in the world, Hilton & Harrah's , they will tell the "average" Joe on occasion that "we are sold out" but I can guarantee you, if a major player hits town they will have a room for him. That's just the way it is. YES, even on New Years Eve!

because there are over 100,000 rooms in las vegas, running from standard rooms to suites larger than 10,000 square feet, Vegas ALWAYS has a room on the strip open (it just depends if you are willing to pay more for one night than you'd pay for your house). But when some of the major coventions come to town, those big dollar rooms get reserved for the high rollers and the average joe cannot find a room at any price.
kind of a yes and no answer, but thats how it is

I can not exactly say how many rooms in total there is in vegas but I can say we sell out vegas completely numerous times each year.
Big events like New year's eve, certain trade shows, most 3 day weekends that have a holiday included and big boxing events.
