It all depends on the type of fish. Like the betta fish. The males have like more fins on them than the females do. Some are actually very easy to tell and some are nearly impossible. It would also help to ask a vet or the people you got the fish from.

get a genaralized book on tropical fish, one with pics in it or seach the net, too many ways to sex a fish to mention here, but for a goldie or koi, i milk mine around spring and then i can tell, males make white stream for sperm, females won't. I am a breeder over 20 yrs, and can be of good help, it would be better if I knew what fish u are working with. for more help, u can email me at white.dove@frontiernet.net

what species of fish you have??
female one always have big stomach, small head, and dont not too many accessory, sometims female bigger than the male.
male always have thin body with big head, and more beautifull with so many accessory and colour.
