Sometimes yes.
Rappers, sadly do. They should be shot for crimes against humanity.
Many singers do mean what they say, and exercise the power of words to influence change. Those great anti war songs of the 60's and 70's for example. Midnight Oil, no one could beat Peter Baret for passion in his words. Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger, Woodie Guthrie.
Many many artist use music as a platform for their politics as well. I think singers write what they mean as often as not because they have something to say. There are as many reasons for writing a song as there are songs.
Look at the Dixie Chicks!

it depends on the singer..
the singer who also writes might really meant what they say it might be something they are going through or a past they want to reveal.. or just to tell the truth about who they are despite all the rumors.. because a song is more noticeable than a gossip
but some just sing what the songwriter wrote
those kinda albums only take a year to make while the singer's who really meant wat they say may take 2-3 years or maybe more..

I think some singers pour all their emotions and life experiences out into their lyrics. So yes, in that sense I think they really mean what they say.
But when your at a concert and they say somthing lame like "I love you san jose, you guys rock!" I know they probably aren't being so truthful, because its so common for bands to say that.

Thats a very good question, one that unfortunately you will not find the answer to here. In reality the only way to truely know is to ask that specific singer themselves. Even then you are not guranteed the truth, but you should base it on your gut instinct and hope for the best.

I think that singer who write their own songs mean what they say...everyone else is just singing about someone else's feelings...you can always tell what Shakira is going through, she always draws inspiration for her music from her personal experiences

I think some of them mean what they say because some of them would write about their lives what they have went through. But most of them dont mean what they say they just want to make their albums first rank, they dont even care about what they put in.
