I notice that everyday essays (e.g., editorials), often do not cite facts and/or statistics that are used to support a position. Why is this accepted for such essays but not accepted for academic essays?

The point is that the reader must make a judgment regarding the value, truth, and accuracy of any essay. One that lacks citations and that gives no credit to sources should be taken at face value IF you give them any value at all. I know I do not!!
