about 14 months is ok to begin breeding. I have 3 beardies and only during the spring can I not keep them all together only because both males want to mate the female. I can keep one male and one female together all the time. but introducing a female into a males tank should not be taken lightly. you will need to observe for an extended period of time. you can put one cage right next or on top of the other and watch the males actions. if he attemps to bite her through the cage then mixing them will be a little more difficult. if he does displays with head bobbing and black bearding. it will get the dominance issue over with before you introduce them also make sure she is showing submissiveness with head floating and arm waving. he will have completed the dominance dance and be happy he is the boss. I have never heard of a female trying to be the dominant one. breeding is not glamorous is cost money and alot of your time. your female will need special care that cost money. she will need to be seen by a herp vet during her first clutch and should be seen shortly after laying to ensure no eggs are bound. after that you probably will not have to see the vet. you will need an incubator. this is my suggestion only not a hard and fast rule but why risk the life of your beardie because you don't want to spend the 35 to see the vet. my girl just layed another clutch and they look great and she is doing fine. if you want more in depth cost analysis and suggestions you can go to google and type in beared dragon breeding or just e-mail me. I would rather it be done right and give out good info than guessing at it. I am glad you are researching this before jumping in.

I have raised several beardies and breeding isn't as easy as you might think. The main problem is compatibility. The male is very territorial and the introduction of a female must be done very carefully. I had one of my males bite the leg of a female completely off. If you are going to put a female with him, observe them closely. If she seems like she is "missing" at any time, she is probably hiding under a rock for safety. If he begins to attack her, she will lay on her back in submission and he generally will then leave her alone for awhile. Occasionally the male will not want ANY other beardy in his space and will fight them to the death if you don't remove the "intruder". The trick is to find a female as close to his size as possible. if not a little larger. This will make him more cautious about attacking. Age? 9-12 months, 12 being better to assure both are sexually mature. It may take a few tries with different females to find the compatible mate. Good luck!

My boyfriend has a breaded dragon (male) and he bred him. He was a few years old though. I don't know what age is safe for them to start breeding but he just happened to have a friend that was giving away a female dragon so they were in the same cage and one day she laid eggs. It is hard to take care of the eggs though. I went to my local reptile store and asked them how to care for them. She laid about 12 eggs and six of them hatched but of the six that hatched only 2 survived and now I have a baby and my boyfriend kept a baby (they are about a year and a half old now). If you have a reptile store in your area I would go in and talk to the people there they usually know something about the reptiles. Hope this was of some help.

Unless you don't want your male to live very long, I suggest you hold off for another year. Breeding snakes don't live as long. Keeping the two together is dicey just because often one will become dominant and prohibit the other from feeding as it should. If you don't see any intimidation or bullying I guess go for it.
