Not a single household like you're thinking. Though if you add up the aging Walton siblings from the Wal-Mart family, they'd be richer in total.
But no, rumors that there are secret trillionaires who just keep it on the down-low are nonsense. You could keep a few million bucks quiet, but it is simply impossible to hide multi-billions in assets from the authorities, from the media, from other people, and from Forbes.
After all, the only way you can be a multi-billionaire anyway is to be a major shareholder in a very large corporation.

The Sultan of Brunei -- he controls the oil for that oil rich nation...especially given the run up in oil prices.
The House of Saud collectively (as a family) may also be richer.

Yes there are people rich than gates through it is hard to believe. All you have to do is look at the engery companies, mainily oil.
