A look that promotes a feeling of polished and professional competency ranks highest among those who do the hiring. A professional look includes clothes, hair, makeup, and accessories that work together to create a professional image. There are certain kinds of clothes appropriate for working women. Fashion taste and good judgment are essential for an adequate and professional wardrobe. Analyze and describe the appropriate career dress for your chosen career, and then plan your wardrobe around this description.

For men, the basics:

1. nice, clean shirt, pants & tie.
2. well groomed hair
3. no piercings or tatoos showing
4. clean shoes
5. clean nails

Studies have shown that certain clothes lend an air of authority to the person wearing them. If you would like to enhance your authority on the job, consider these suggestions.

* Wear quality.
* Wear a jacket, with a long-sleeve shirt.
* Wear subtle, sophisticated colors such as navy, dark gray, black, taupe, etc. If bright colors are becoming to you, wear them in a tie print or a shirt stripe.
* Wear small, sophisticated prints and tweeds rather than large shapes and designs.
* Carry a fine leather briefcase, preferably in a dark color.
* Keep consistently high standards to your look. Always look and act professional.
* A vest is usually considered "authoritative" for presidents or top level executives.

For women:

* Wear quality.
* Wear a jacket to work -- the higher the quality, the more authority.
* Wear subtle, sophisticated colors. If bright colors are becoming to you, wear them occasionally.
* Wear small, sophisticated prints or geometrics rather than large shapes or designs.
* Carry a fine leather handbag -- not trendy but classic.
* Always add finishing touches to your outfit -- a belt, a small pair of earrings, a gold chain.
* Wear good quality jewelry if your can afford it; if you can't, wear a fine costume copy.
* Always keep the same high standard to your look. Be consistent.

I love to speak on these questions because they are so wide open. What is the business and what do you do? If for example your a Network engineer (as I am), A lot of times I go to work in jeans, shorts, sneakers etc. I am looking professional. However, if on that day I have to interface with my customers, then tradition dictates here. Dress pants, collared shirt, maybe a tie if I'm meeting with a Director or, higher up. On the other hand if my car needs work and a guy wearing a shirt and tie tells me what’s wrong I might be suspicious of that (Thinking he's going to try and sell me something)...No, no, the guy I want to see has greasy hands, oil on his pants and sweat on his brow. Now this is a Professional Mechanic I want to be talking to. Look the part for the job your doing. Of course if your just "looking for the look" well that can be one of two things - A) Your trying to move up and impress the boss or B), your sucking up, don't know anything but want to look like you do. What’s more important to you Looking or, being? Professionalism ware's many hats and depends on your business and how you speak. (in my opinion)

The definition of "professional" differs by industry and oocupation. A professional warehouse worker will dress differently than a professional bank executive. Look at the common work attire for your occupation and duplicate it. Make sure that clothing is clean and pressed; shoes are polished and appropriate for the job; hair and fingernails are neat and well-groomed; visible tattoos and piercings are minimal; jewelry is appropriate and low-key.

The general rule for advancement is to dress for the job one level above your own.

You can have a professional look only if you really are a professional in what you do, false appearance will not help you.

Our organization prides itself on its staff' prime degree of professionalism: all of our staff are attired in uniforms/reputable industry apparel. We take pleasure in retaining our fleet of autos to be able to gift our purchasers with the fine first influence.
