I have the perfect pet for you. I'm not sure how old you are but usually I would say 7-12 is a good time to get your first pet. Hampsters are not the most lovable creatures but if you treat them gently and don't bother them too much when they're asleep (mostly during the day while you're at school), they won't run away from you. They normally cost 4 or 5$ and the cage and supplies (if you buy them new) may cost up the 30$. We gave away our whole setup so keep an eye out at pet shops and bulletin boards. Our hampster, Chad, lived for 2 1/2 years. He was an old old man when he died. We were very sad. But people and animals die and that's another part of learning to care for pets. Although I had my doubts about buying a boy hampster (because of the big lump on thier bottom end when they become teenagers) it wasn't as gross as I thought it would be. You could hold him and yes, even dress him up in Barbie clothes. We took him outside on the grass and kept our legs and feet together so it was like a fence to keep him in. He did best in his hampster ball though. They even have little car shaped ones now. The most important thing about keeping a hampster healthy, happy, and alive is keeping his cage clean. Did you know hampsters can be potty trained? Let them pee in whatever spot they choose in thier cage at first and then clean it with hot soapy water (or a dishwasher!) and set a hampster potty or small dish there with some clumping kitty litter in it. They'll go there from then on. That way, you won't have to clean the cage so often. Just pull out the dish and clean it once or twice a week and he won't smell bad at all. Hampster poops can be scooped up with a business card and thrown away. It's the pee that will kill them if it's not cleaned up at least once a week. When you hear about a hampster that died when it was new, it was probably because it had to breathe it's own terrible, gassy, urine smell for too long. If I can do one good thing in this world, I'd want it to be to save the lives of these sweet little furballs. They are so fun to watch and just wait until you see one of them yawn! It's frightening! Good luck with your decision. Hope this helped!

a ferret? a chinchilla? not too much experience with either, but i have a friend who has 7 ferrets, participates in ferret rescue, etc., and she dresses a few of them up. They also like to go outside, but only on a leash of course or they run away. But if you're looking for an outside only pet, there aren't many options besides a dog or a cat or anything small.

How about a rabbit? Guinea pigs are pretty cool, too. if you spend a lot of time with them when they are young, they become used to being handled and can be great pets. My mom has one that is turning 7 next month and she is fabulous. Good luck in anything you choose, just please be a responsible pet owner and take care of your new friend.

How do you feel about parrots? I've heard they're lots of fun and intelligent. I've seen people walk around with their parrot every where.

Look up the care for them though. I'm not sure if they're outside pets.

Any pet that you intend to put outdoors needs appropriate shelter from wind, rain, and sun... and not to mention predators.
