I'm going to add to Kristy's answer.
The Quaran does say to beat your wife, if she does something warrenting it. however, you must first speak with her about it, then if she still does it, speak to her againg, and if she still does it, then beat her with a feather, then if she does it again then you may hit her with a stick, but not out of anger or vengence. Most people are quick to jump to the last part without using the other steps first.
And I think the way Islam is practiced by more 5 billion people (the peaceful non violent way) is very uplifting to women, especially if you look at the time. Men could marry multipule wives, in the Quaran it says a man can, but he must ask his wife and treat them both as equal not favoring one over the other. If a man cannot do that, then he cannot marry 2 or more women.
Women do not have to wear a hijab, some women chose to, others do not. In militant extremest Islamic countries they do, but they make up the minority. some women wear the Hijab so people don't look at them for their beauty but rather as an equal, because the hair of a women is beautiful and a distraction to men.
Islamic Femeinism isn't an oxymoron. You just have to get away from the sterotypes of Islam (Middle Eastern Terrorists). Remember: Most Arabs are Muslim. Most Mulsims are not Arab.

Unlike Christianity, women are treated more or less as property under Islam. So it's a bit of an oxymoron, just like Christian feminism.
In Islam it's acceptable to beat your wife; in Christianity it's not.

No, it isn't, because much of what the Qur'an says about women is positive, and supportive of womens' rights concerning marriage and children, among other things. There are guidlines about how to dress, but they say to cover certain areas of the body, nothing that jeans and a decent shirt wouldn't cover, not to cover every body part but the eyes. Men also have guidelines like this. Inheritance laws say that a woman's inheritance must be half that of a mans', so in that aspect, ideas of Islamic feminism could be considered breached.
A great, in depth article on this can be found at:

No. I think that Islamic Feminists are still practicing the fundamental principles of feminism. However if you understand that then you realize that a person must begin from their own experience or standpoint. This would differ significiently from other feminist groups because they don't share the same experiences nor are they working on the same issues in equality.
Islamic women have other ideals to contend with and although this at times may seem counter production it in fact is moving in the same direction under feminist theory.

Look up the meaning of oxymoron in the dictionary, and then rephrase your question.

There are Islamic feminists out there. You can read all about it in Ms. There's a semi-secret women's magazine, Zanan, in Iran.

Yes, because Islamic women are often deprived of a lot of human rights and not allowed to be feminists----unless they just break away from tradition and become outcasts of a kind. But what do I know? I'm Catholic
