I don't want to blame it all on pirating but alot of it is due to that. Everyone copies someone else's CD and share's it around now. The record companies charge outrageous prices for CDs and put out ALOT of crap music while overlooking alot of really good bands out there (who by the way go out on small labels or sell via the internet on their own). The record companies need to listen to their consumers instead of trying to bend the consumers to their own will......we want quality music for a reasonable price!!! Stop selling alot of crap for high prices and telling us it's great....then accusing of robbing you blind by pirating good music!! Grow up and set up a reasonable download system that both artists and consumers can live with.

This is an easy one to answer - the years of corporate greed have finally caught up to the big labels. When CDs were introduced onto the market, we were all told the price would eventually be the same as a record's - only higher because the technology was new. Today, the list price of a CD is $18.99 - an increase from their debut.
The big labels have continually gouged the consumer while putting out sub-standard, cookie-cutter product. Once upon a time, bands would be given the chance to build up an audience; nowadays, labels will only sign someone who they think will sell five million copies right out of the gate. Some great bands have been dropped to the side through no fault of their own - and the product we hear today in this "American Idol"-ized music industry is sewage. (I will, though, give props to Kelly Clarkson - she can sing, and is talented.)
The labels need to sell quality music at a FAIR PRICE in order to win the consumer back - but, to be honest, I think it's too late for them. Also, they need to STOP THE LAWSUITS against file-sharers, and try to figure out a way to win them back into the fold, rather than continue to cause animosity between themselves and those who put money in their pockets.

The problem is not with Pirating Cd's its the Fact that the RIAA is sueing its potenal sales market.
The fact that the Riaa is sueing people 1,000 for every 1 illegal mp3 is simply crazy and showing they have no grasp on technology. Every time i see that the Riaa is issuing more lawsuits i count the number of people it is sueing and then for every person they are sueing that is one cd i am not buying from them.. so they are losing thousands of dollars in sales for there own stupidity.
The other reason sales are slipping is because there is no new music and the whole mtv/hip hop/ rap crap erra is coming to a close.. Corporatins like viacom and others are pushing on us crap that was cool 15 years ago and they are smuthering bands with a diffrent sound because rap and hip hop have sold so well in the past when the urban cultry boomed.
now i do by new cds still but only from bands that i like.. Anytime NIN or Tool or Ramstein or Weird Al release a new albume i buy it if i can i buy it from there website not that it makes that big of a diffrence but i like to think it does and if all else fails there is always ebay.

Crappy music. Pure and simple. Illegal downloading is a symptom not the cause. The music industry continually pumps out horrible products that nobody besides teeny-boppers that don't know any better want.

Pretty much downloading music, a lot of times it's cheaper and you have the music right away without leaving your house.
