All music is derivative---so it is difficult to distinguish between past and present. So many bands inspired bands today. The Rolling Stones and Aerosmith have been truly blessed with longevity---but I would have to go with The Eagles. They are so talented that the members have gone there separate ways and have been just as successful. Together as a band, they are played on classic rock stations, soft classic rock, rock, country, elevator music ( you know, without the lyrics ), etc... They definitely have the market dick-ed across the board.

Led Zeppelin......they defined an era, they practically invented the term "heavy metal"......Jimmy Page is the guitarist that every guitarist in the 80s and on wanted to be; he showed them what it was to be a heavy metal gutarist and he's still showing them!!! Robert Plant can still belt out a song better than some of these new bands, and in his heyday....they couldn't dream of touching him!! Zeppelin was what every band wanted to be......they had that "light and dark" thing going on in their music. They were considered heavy metal but yet alot of their songs are blues, or acoustic or slow and thoughtful. They are a very deep band if you really get into their music.....past the media hype of satanism, curses and groupie stories.
They have to rate IMHO as the greatest band ever!!

Currently .... AFI (If you think im crazy get a hold of the album Decemberunderground and listen to it)
Past ... The Doors (They shaped the rock genre for decades after by introducing the idea that rock music should be controversial and contain a degree of theatre while still being able to whip people in a party frenzy)

KISS. They started the whole super pyro Stadium Rock movement. And helped set Bon Jovi, Van Halen on their way. Plus they are the inspiration for many new bands today. Also great for live shows are RAMMSTEIN. Industrial Rock at its finest.
