I'm guessing it's screwed and broken. It emits a lovely tune every time I try plugging it in. Is there any way to retrieve the files from it? Could sending it to an "expert" help in any way? Or am I doomed?

Watch out! you could damage external hard drive. Wait please!

Few weeks ago I have lost my computer's hard drive. It was doing same, I kept trying to use various methods and finally the computer company's said, I sent my computer very late I should have sent for check up earlier.

So, my advise, if it is making strange noises send it to the maker if possible or ask some professional or computer related people around you. This is the safest way you could safe your data.

If hard drive is not broken then someone could copy hard drive to new one if possible.

Please do not try to use hard drive unless you show to professional.

Try restarting your computer or plugging it into another USB socket.
