Phone interviews are there to help the busy interviewer to sort out the wheat from the chaff... (i.e. throw out hte really bad ones).
So just be honest, try not to be too nervous.
Be aware that some open ended questions will be asked:
What are your strengths? Weaknesses?
Some technical items - i.e. do you know what red blood types there are??
I am in the computer field and I ask people a specific item on the computer and have them relate to me what they know about it.
I just do not want to waste my time with a physical interview if the person is a dunce.
Each person has different criteria, but employers are looking for honesty, dependability, technical knowledge (in their field).
So, make sure that you do not contradict anything on your resume ;), but if you lied on your resume you will be in trouble - that is the trouble with lying, one does not know what one said the last time.
Here are some mechanics advice that I found would be useful:

Same questions they'd ask in person. Why do you want to work here. What are your strengths and weaknesses. Describe a difficult situation that you dealt with successfully. Where do you see yourself in 5 years, in 10 years. As well as just any information about your credentials and work history that is not contained in your resume/application. To the extent that they legally can, they will try to explore any factors in your life that might keep you from showing up to work on a regular basis.
Just keep in mind that any employer is looking for people who are going to be low maintenance, competent employees who are going to keep them from having to go through the interview process again anytime soon.

First let me know what is your profession ? Generally you have to keep punctual in telephone interview. Be patient and hear the question clearly and answer with good command of English.
if you don't know the answer tell him that I am not familier with the answer. Generally they will ask you about your educational qualifications and when you completed and how much marks you obtained in your final year exam etc.
For Professional the interviewer will ask about the previous work experience. Be polite, and answer the question in a confidence mode.
First you prepare the details in paper, that will help you in your interview.
Wish you all the best- Please don't hesitate to contact me- jayancjaa@yahoo.com

Basically the same types of questions you'd be asked if it was in person. Why do you want to work for us? Why should we hire you? What kinds of KSA's (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities) do you have? You could also check out www.rileyguide.com/ or www.wetfeet.com or even www.careerbuilder.com for more interviewing tips. Don't forget to ask some questions of your own!! Good luck!!

Ask how much they are paying, if they don't give a straight answer then put the phone down.
