Bar none the #1 best way to find a family pet is by visiting shelters. All of my animals have either been strays, rescues or adoptees from shelters. Plus adopting is usually cheaper than buying from a pet store and you're saving an animal from being euthanized.
You can also check your local newspaper, check the ad board at veterinary clinics or check the web.

There are millions of sites out there now to find a pet. I'd suggest you start with pound sites. There are sooooo many animals out there already looking for homes and as far as I'm concerned, the mixed breeds are generally much healthier. Genetically, they don't seem to have the same inbred problems (hip dysplasia in German Shepherds, high strung nature of Irish Setters) and you can get a unique dog, one that doesn't look like a carbon copy of a million other dogs. I've owned 10 different pure breds from Brittany Spaniels to Black Labs and none compared to the health and brilliance of my dog Maxx, a mutt from the local pound. Give a refugee a home. You won't be disappointed.

If you have a specific breed in mind go to the AKC website and research the breed. They have listings of Breeders and Breed Rescue groups. Contact both. One should always talk to people that own the breed and find out if your life style matches the needs of the breed (working breeds need to work, lap dogs need laps).
Petfinder is an excellent web resource to find local dogs needing re homed. Don't forget to spay or neuter

I've looked on www.petfinder.com and it's a good website. You can either look at shelter animals or look at their classifieds. If you are looking for a dog or puppy www.puppyfind.com has a lot. If you do a Google search for " puppies for sale" you can probably find some more websites.

Maybe you can go to places where you adopt pets. They give them for free.
