Basically functionalism is associated with Durkheim and it means that all the things we ahve in society like crime and inequality do something for society and they work. We need them and they can never be eliminated. Conflict theory is marx and it is that things like crime and inequality are the products of opression and are bad for society and we should work to change them.

Conflict theorists see the conflicts in society as evidence of the elite holding the power and keeping the rest of society down on the bottom rungs. Structuralists see such conflicts as functional for society to continue to work.
