Once the Spartans, being greatly outnumbered, did stand up to the Persians but remember that it's a historical fact that's been distorted in the telling and retelling until, now, it's a legend and can't be considered to be historical fact.

Secondly, the story was made into a graphic novel (comic book for adults) and so it was further distorted (such as adding mutant Persian warriors with swords as arms or whatever).

Thirdly, the graphic novel was then made into the movie and they wanted an artistic rendering not a literal and historically accurate rending of the battle and times.

Lastly, keep in mind the movie is told from the narrator's viewpoint. The guy who lost his eye and was sent back to Sparta with the King's necklace is telling the tale and, naturally, his own perceptions and emotions are coloring what he tells and, consequently, what we see because it's meant to be as if he's telling us and the rest of the Spartans the story

So, is it "true?" It's based on fact but it's fictionalized fact.

Slavery was extremely common back then. It would be hard for Persians not to have slaves. In fact, some historians say that even Sparta had slaves.

Just think of it as a movie that is based on a comic book... that is in turn loosely based on a historical event.

Not all of it is fact - the movie was based on the comic by Frank Miller (of Sin City fame) and he acknowledged the fact that he changed a lot of historical facts to make it look better on the screen, especially things like the Spartan's battle formations.

Hey, the movie was filmed almost entirely on blue and/or green screens. How real can it *get*?

certainly, Ted's reaction grew to become into no longer stunning. The action picture 3 hundred grew to become into certainly a real tale. in the previous Alexander the great, the King of Sparta Leonidis and 3 hundred of his ideal warriors fought the Persian king Xerxes's invasion in 480 BC. that's observed the conflict of Thermopylae. as a techniques because of fact the action picture is in touch, i assumed they might of given it slightly extra communication, and not in basic terms a tale action picture. P.S. in case you % to verify extra with regard to the Spartans, verify the history books. each little thing with regard to the action picture, (including that incontrovertible fact that the spartans discarded the toddlers that have been week, that incontrovertible fact that at 7 boys did flow to a battling college, etc. ) The action picture grew to become into certainly very precise.

Think of this movie as a novel, a work of fiction based upon an historical event. It's from a graphic comic for chrissakes. Why does everyone believe that this movie is claiming to be fact??? It never makes that claim.

the movie 300 was pretty awesome but check your local listings and see if you can watch the recently released documentary on the history channel. it was FASCINATING. in fact, it was so awesome that i believe the movie was less interesting than the real events! you can read a brief description of the program here: http://www.history.com/shows.do?episodeId=214233&action=detail
(The title of the program is Last Stand of The 300.)
i'm not kidding at all: the real deal was so much more fascinating than the movie.

and if you still wanna dig deeper, get a copy of Thermopylae: The Battle for the West. you can read more about it here:

http://www.amazon.com/Thermopylae-Battle-West-Ernle-Bradford/dp/0306813602/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2/002-2200910-3254455?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1174738159&sr=1-2

after reading about the real events that inspired the movie, i think you'll agree that the real events were just amazing.

the story of the 300 is true ,but Hollywood did take creative license. as for the persians not having slaves, well you must understand that slavery was a way of life with certain rules. for example, ever heard of sweat shops? they pay their people to,just enuf to live on, but never enuf to advance.

You should cite your sources.

But anyway, I know that it was based on fact but I know that it's not completely factual. It was a terrific movie though.
