Read.

It doesn't have to be a profound book with lots of difficult words; it will only make you hate learning English. Read what you like - eg. mystery novels/ sci-fi, etc - and you will pick up new words, phrases that will somehow creep into your speech and written essays. =)

There are a few ways to build a vocabulary. One of the best ways is to read. Another is to talk with native speakers of the language or to watch movies and TV. Test your skills with crossword puzzles. There are also a number of interactive quizzes on line. Search for S.A.T. preparation sites and use the FREE (don't pay for them) quizzes. Good luck.

well when teaching my children new words e.t.ci tend to make up rhymes and poems which they will remeber forever.
i learnt how to spell because this way
b - big
e - elephants
c - can't
a - always
u - use
s - small
e - exits

i taught my little sister about full stops years ago when she first started infant school. she still rembers the poem now.
STOP(hand out)
says the full full stop
STOP (hand down)
the stop goes here
it doesnt make sense if there was no stop without me you'd take no breath STOP (hand out again) or your under arrest

it can be to any tune, make it fun. i remeber she had a worksheet with a story about little red riding hood, however there were no full stops. her homework was to put the full stops in. i read it without taking a breath, she thought it was hilarious but then i read it with full stops(where i thought they would go) and she seemed to love the story. so then we worked together on simple phrases putting the song in at the end of the sentence.

children tend to like to learn in fun and practicall approaches
us 'adults' are children deep down so it should work the same with us

The fastest and most effective way is:
Randomly pick words out of the dictionary that you don't know.
Use the words in conversation that day.
