Hon, were you born in another culture your gift would have been honed. Now what you have is untrained and unasked for visions. They can be frustrating especially if you feel you have seen something that is preventable!
For your own safety, since you are untrained I advise you keep yourself protected and pure. This is easy. Before you drift off to sleep at night, imagine yourself surrounded by a strong impenetrable white light. A protective bubble that allows your energy to flow out but nothing unwanted to flow in. Then ask your God to help you remember your dreams.
Past lives are very real. Reincarnation is a very real dance we do throughout the halls of time. Once in awhile we will resonate and touch on the past. Not all of us but some. It can be a bit disconcerting I know.
You will find there are people you meet whom you love or hate immediately for no reason at all. That is because your soul recognizes them, not your conscious mind. That is the origin of "love at first sight". (I have a husband I will meet in a few hundred years and we have vowed to remember each other. I pray we are not born as twins!)
The clue is to find what times in history "ring" with you. Study about ancient times and history and you will find some feel more "right". With me it was very ancient Egypt, 1100 Wales and 1890 Paris. Don't count on being famous. Chances are you were a nobody just like everyone else! If everyone who claimed to be Cleopatra had been...history would have been very different! LOL.
I remember other lives, too, but those were the biggies I best remembered. Usually when you remember part of a life you remember it at the Kodak moment of the soul. This is when something momentous happened. From there the life will possibly unfold for you if you work at it.
However, I do not advise digging into past lives without professional help. It is very easy to slip and get caught between two worlds and madness has been the result of such dangerous play, although that is rare. We have memory barriers between lives for several reasons. One is to protect us from our accumulated memories!
However I will tell you what I know about dreams. There are different kinds of dreams. Every interpreter has a different way of grouping them. I find this way works for me.
It is important to write down your dreams first thing when you awaken. Within a few minutes they have disappeared like dandelion spores into the breezes. Make note of your mood when you awaken. Then go on from there. Sometimes my dreams are so long lasting and deep I carry a booklet around with me for when a revelation comes to me during the day.
1.There are prophetic dreams where you see the future. For example, the dreams Joseph saw and took to Pharaoh. They are always in colour and action follows a logical sequence.
2.There are release dreams. These dreams are the most confusing of all. Chaotic, preposterous, disturbing. Emotional exhaling. They are the most necessary dreams because through release dreams we dispose of everyday mental and emotional garbage that we collect. Some are silly but many can be nightmares.
Despite the stress, they are important for us. Good way to work out fear angers frustration and stress. Without nightmares, btw, we would easily all end up crazy. Usually they are jumbles of images and as turbulent as the negativity they are helping one dispose of.
3.There are wish dreams. These are just as the name says. We dream of what we want or think we want and usually awaken from them with a feeling of satisfaction.
4.There are information and problem-solving dreams. You fall asleep chewing on a problem and wake up knowing the solution. Or know something we could not have known before we went to sleep. The advice “Sleep on it” is very valid.
Did you know the Theory of Relativity came to Einstein in a dream? Or that Mozart received his compositions while he slept? The invention of the light bulb and the sewing machine also came from dreams. Dr. Salk got his ideas for the polio vaccine in a dream.
5.There are astral visiting dreams. These are usually telepathic dreams or astral travel dreams. In these we visit and are visited by those we love on earth and the other planes.
Lucid dreams can be any of the five types above. When a dream is lucid, you realize within the dream that you are dreaming. When this happens, you can take control of the dream. You can be in control of your own reactions. So if you have these warning dreams you mention, while you sleep tell yourself you will remember the dream. Focus on one important thing to remember when you wake up and write it down IMMEDIATELY. keep at it. It is not a skill one develops over night.
Good luck.

My entire life I've struggled with rage. I've always been fascinated by WWII. I remember writing a paper in highschool about how World War 2 was one of the most important events for me, even though I wasn't born yet. I have this problem where I consider everyone, including friends and family, as enemies. I fantasize about combat, often.
Recently, I came in contact with a self-professed shaman. He told me that he could see past lives. He told me that he was surprised because I had been reincarnated so quickly. He told me, without me giving him any information, that I was a soldier in World War 2. He told me that I died some years after the war was over from stress and alcoholism.
I don't know if it's real, but it's neat to think about.

Yes, I absolutely do believe in past lives. Reincarnation hasn't been proven yet, by science, but it will be in time, because it is truth, and truth always comes out eventually. Many people already have this knowledge, and some of them don't want the masses to know about it or believe in it. Barbara's answer is so good, that I wouldn't have needed to answer this question myself, because there is very little I can add, but I want to save her answer. I think you would really enjoy reading all of Neale Donald Walsch's books, beginning with Conversations with God, books 1, 2, and 3. *sm*

Yes,I strongly believe in past life. There are some truth which we cant explain nor control. In our Hinduism we believe in this.Lord Ram was cursed by Tara when Bali was killed by Rama. She imprecated that Rama will not get Sita in his life and He has to suffer her absence .Then Lord Rama was born as Lord Shree Krishna and Sita as Radhika .They suffered due to this .And I have seen so many talented chilren who can show the talent of the past famous people. And the truth is that we can feel something about a person or a region. So we cant ignore all these.

I believe in past lives. I believe our preferences in life, our path which we take has been influenced by our actions within the past. I have the same type of dreams(i.e. being in war) more often than not and I cannot help but think I was involved in a war somewhere in my past. Your dream is the outlet to which your subconscious mind communicates with you. Dont ignore it.

I like the idea. When people start talking aobut Heaven and eternal bliss or pain i keep thinking, well that would get boring pretty quick. Although i'm Atheist and I don't beleive in things until they can be proven I like the idea that I could get to have another bash at this awfully comlicated business of living.
I wouldn't know where to begin in talking to you about it though, maybe check out your nearest new Age shop, maybe they can put you in touch with someone.

If you consider your current existing then past means what you have crossed and there is no question about it.Dreaming is our birth right. But believe in dreams some times put you in trouble.Believe in thoughts and not in dreams.Thoughts can be controlled but dreams can not be controlled.

I am a social care worker,i visit a woman who is blind.
She believes in spiritualism, she also visited many spiritualism venue's when she was younger and still has friends who believe in it.
The 4th time i went to visit her she asked me to sit down as she has something to tell me,she cannot see at all,she is a lovely woman, very gentle and extremely kind.
She really took me by suprise when she said she knows me from a past life, she asked if i had brown eye's and hair,i told her yes.
She said, 'i thought so,you have brown eyes and hair when i knew you'
Afew days later she said to me 'my son went shopping for me today,i asked him to get you a custard cake as i know you like them'
How would she know that!!
I was absolutely floored by it.
She said she feels we have a very strong connection and said it feels to her that i am infact her.
In the beginning it used to worry me but now im beginning to come round to it,she's a very calming woman and there is something about her that comforts me.
I have never believed in any of this until i started visiting her.

I believe there is more to this world than our earthly plane of existence, that which we describe as our journey from the cradle to the grave.
I believe there are connections beyond our human senses, and much we may not perceive in this 'here and now.'
I found my soulmate. We are transcendant in love, and we found each other in a place far beyond time and space. Our connection is so strong, our love is absolute and it is as though we were always one...
.. and we have been together through the ages, and we love so completely that we are destined to always be together..
.. in this life, and in any other life.
