The guilty tourist merely said, "Oh" . In carrying her and runing through the crowd to water, I tripped and fell . How could I have handled the situation better?

Is this for real? Your child was burned "superficially" by a cigarette and you tripped and fell? That would have hurt her a lot worse than a "superficial" burn. And did you have a doctor or EMT or some medical person look at the burn to see if it was truly superficial? A burn on the face is not superficial, and a cigarette burn can cause scarring. As to running for water, could you not have stopped and asked for help? I don't understand this - you acted in panic, and probably made the situation a lot worse.

Depending on where you were, smoking has been banned in so many places in the U.S., that you could have made it a lot worse for the "guilty tourist." Were there No Smoking signs around?

Any time your child is hurt you need to remain calm - a tiny burn is a lot less significant than falling and causing her a head injury.

Secondly, keep your child away from people with lit cigarettes in their hand is not only advisable from a health standpoint, but a safety one as well.

Finally, never run with your child in your arms. The is is too high because momentum will carry you forward meaning your child will strike the ground before you and then your body weight can cause further injury.

As a mom of 4 I have had numerous boo-boo's, uh-oh's, and few oh shits - but remaining calm is the best thing you can do for your child. Keeping the out of harms way as best you can is one of your most important roles of being a parent, but accidents can (and will) happen.

In reading just this little tiny snippet, I get the impression the burn was an accident and not life threatening? When you tripped and fell did the child eventually get care for the superficial burn? I don't understand what you're asking. How could you have handled it better? By not tripping and falling maybe? Am I missing something?

Calmly working your way through the crowd to get to water as well as asking if anyone in the crowd had bottled water you could have used. Or a restaurant were near by going there and asking for water, ice, or use the washroom in the loo.

Am so sorry to hear that. A report to the police should have been made, perhaps they could hold some justice.
