We are about to have a baby, and my mum suggested that babies shouldnt have anything microwaved & also feeding bottles shouldnt be sterlised in the microwaved because it could be harmful.
Is there any truth in this? I've always thought microwaved food was fine for babies.

"Microwaving baby formulas converted trans-amino acids into thier synthetic cis-isomers. Synthetic isomers, whether cis-amino acids or trans fatty acids, are not biologically active. Further, one of the amino acids, L-proline, was converted to its d-isomer, which is know to be neurotoxic (poisonous to the nervous system) and nephrotoxic (poisonous to the kidneys). It's bad enough that many babies are not nursed, but now they are given fake milk (baby formula) made even more toxic via microwaving." Dr. Lita Lee of Hawaii, dec 9, 1989 from Lancet.

Microwaves should be used in extreme moderation for adults... NEVER used on formula or food given to babies and young children. Basically, microwaves over-denature food. They turn food into something that our body doesnt know what to do with, and that can actually be harmful to us.

Trust your mother on this one.

Your newborn baby won't need any food apart from either breastmilk or formula for the first 4 - 6 months. The problem with microwaves is that they cause hot spots. If you heat a bottle in a microwave make sure you shake it up well and always test it. Same with food when your little one is older.

no, the microwave emits 'micro-waves' that can be harmful to pregnant Moms...(suggested, not proven) you should not heat baby's bottles in the microwave because it may heat unevenly, there could be a 'hot spot' that could scald the baby....and shaking the bottle after warming wont solve this! Never microwave breastmilk, because it can essentially 'kill' it..it breaks it down and ruins much of the nutrients in it....
to sterilize is another story....you can put things in a dishwasher, pot of boiling water, or buy a separate sterilzer ...these are pretty handy! Medela sells a 'sterilizer bag' that goes in the microwave to sterilize bottles.

Most bottles can be steam sterilised in the microwave - you can buy special sterilising kits.
If you warm formula or food in the microwave be sure it is stirred REALLY well before feeding (don't put the bottle teat or drinking straws in the microwave when warming, because they can get very hot in a short time).
But why not save money and hassle, and try breastfeeding?

BTW - it's your baby, and your responsibility to look after him/her. Listen to everyone's advice, then make your own decisions about what is best for you and your family.

Since newborn babies can't eat anything, food is the last thing you need to worry about right now. Until a baby is able to sit up by itself, you can't feed it anything, then only processed baby food. And you can't sterilize bottles in the microwave. Today's bottles are cleaned easily in a dishwasher if you have one, unless you are a total slob and don't clean the milk residue out of bottles and from around the cap.

NO! Don't ever use the microwave where a baby is concerned. It doesn't heat the food thoroughly and leaves hot spots in it. Also, a newborn doesn't need baby food for at least 4-6 months depending on what your pediatrician suggest. Be safe and listen to your mother as she has experience. :)

First, you don't heat breastmilk in microwave, period, because that kills the antibodies, which is the top benefit of breastmilk.

Now, anything else is just fine to heat in microwave. Just make sure you shake the bottle, and stir the food evenly after heating to disburse any hot spots. Oh com'on, you adults don't heat food in microwave? Do you just not stir and eat it and burn your tongue? The key is to make sure the food's temperature is even. I always heat baby stuff in 10 second intervals, then stir or shake well.

babies don't need food... just formula or breastmilk. It is unsafe to warm bottles in the microwave because it can form "hot pockets" in the bottle that can scortch the baby's mouth/throat. To warm the bottle, just get a small bowl and put hot tap water in it....... set the bottle in it for a few minutes.. should be good to go.

Do not put milk in the microwave. The milk heats unevenly and causes the milk to be scalding in some places and cold in others. Even if you shake the milk "hot spots" are still apparent.

It is best to warm milk in a sauce pan or under hot tap water.

NEVER NEVER use a microwave for babies and toddlers, throughout all the hospitals in England they are banned as they can cause heat spots, and scold your babies mouth, also do not use on a toddler as they do not think to blow on their food, also never heat milk in their not just food
