a woman in my workplace got maternity leave and has been off work for ages. makes me almost wish i could get pregnant myself. (a bit unlikely considering i`m male) also does she still get full pay?

in response to one replier. i`m aware pregnancy, child birth and aftercare is`nt all fun and games, next to zero i would imagine. i apologise for any misunderstanding, however she can always hire a babysitter to ease the pressure. thanks for all the other replies, they were very helpful.

this woman returned to work today, i decided to ask her. she was very amused by my internet question. (i`m not sure why) she had 26 weeks on full pay and a further 20 weeks on £108. she could have stayed off a bit longer but decided to come back. she say`s her husband is her own private babysitter. (he had paternity leave) they are getting on very well.

A woman has up to a year of maternity leave. No you don't get full pay. I did get 60% of my wages through disability if your company offers it though. Each company is different. By the way they have paternity leave also up to a year. So don't feel that left out.

I think it can vary depending on your work place, I received 12 weeks of paid leave and I could take up to 12 months off in total. You can also use any annual leave or long service leave you have available. A lot of work places have paternity leave for males, so your wish may still come true (maybe not the actual pregnant part).

Most good companies give full pay. Why does it matter to you? She just went through a life changing event that was very traumatic on her body. She is at home changing diapers, feeding a baby and working hard to take care of a helpless life. While you sleep all night she is getting up every 2 hours to feed and change the baby.
So think about that next time you complain about a women going on maternity leave.
Most women are bonded with their babies and are not comfortable hiring a babysitter. They need time to bond and she needs to heal and be accustom to having a new life to care for.

Currently 26weeks @ 1st 6weeks=90% of pay
20 weeks at SMP around £108per wk
(although so companies contribute extra too this SMP)
An additional 26weeks maybe taken but this is without pay.
But from April 1st 2007 babies due on or after this date mother is entitled to 39weeks as before but with the additional 13 also recieving SMP rising to £112 per week.

I think it's 12 weeks, (3 months) but it use to be just 6 weeks I think. If you have been at a place for a long time and have built up days then you will get paid (full) on leave. My friend just came back to work and she had 12 weeks off from work and she got full pay.

Women are entitled to up to 1 year maternity leave, but they can decide how long they have off they must have 2 weeks off immediately after the baby is born. And normally women get something called maternity pay which they can only get for a maximum of 39 weeks hope this helps you.

26 weeks but from april fist an additional 26 weeks although that is unpaid, some companies pay full opay but i think its 6 weeks at 90% then 108 a week. they desearve the time off to bond with there child

Where I live, we only get 6 weeks, or 8 weeks for a c-section. That is the time that short term insurance lasts. Any time beyond that is either unpaid, or if you have vacation time, you use that. It's not nearly enough!
I live in CT, and work for a small company (100), doing payroll.

It will depend on the conditions in her contract. I suspect there is a limit to the period over which she will get full pay. It's likely that after that time has elapsed, she will receive little or nothing in financial terms, but her job will be held open for her. Probably not forever, though.
