The real history behind Columbus and other sailors is not analyzed in the class rooms. When the Turks captured Constantinople and ceased the land root to INDIA, Europeans were under pressure to find new sea route to INDIA. This makes every European nation to send sailors and sailors also took this as new opportunity to explore new world. But unfortunately Columbus found WEST INDIES group of islands near American continent. Columbus changed the world without knowing that he found new land.Amerigo vespucci informed to the spanish kingdom that the land found is not india but it is the new continent.

Columbus changed the world in a way that not many people know of. Obviously he found a "new world" a continent that was not known, but he also did a little something that not many people know. The King and Queen of Spain sent columbus on more than just a search for spices. Spain at this time was in the middle of opium shortage. Columbus was sent to Southeast Asia and possibly the middle east to bring back more opium for the country of spain. Back in this time opium was a popular drug used by most everyone, so Columbus along with his crew all had a ration of opium for daily use. When he arrived to the "new world" he was introduced to tobacco. Columbus mixed tobacco with opium, and the craze of smoking opium was born. They used to the poppy seeds that had they with them, and grew them in the "new world" (which is why opium plants grow in this country" They found out when you smoke opium, it took less to get the same effect in the traditional way they were using it. He brought this idea back to Spain, along with tons of opium that they grew when they were in the Americas. Spain no longer had an opium shortage, and they found out how to use less to get the same "high" that they liked. ...that's something they won't teach you in a history class.

If it were not Columbus, it would have been another European explorer to sail across the big pond and plant the flag for some king or queen. Behind Christobal Colombo there were whole societies looking for and needing change, he was fortunate enough to be available in 1492. Yes, those societies changed the world - they expanded themselves.

Ok people heres some history! Columbus didnt actually find what we consider America proper. What he found was Central America. I think we give him too much credit for finding "america" when someone had already found America proper (Amerigo Vespucci-I'm sure I spelled his name all wrong!) some years before. I think he was vital to exploration and the advancement of travel and the world but he was by no means as great as we portray him to be.

Technically he didn't change the actual world, but in culture and society yes. If he hadn't have discovered the western hemisphere, then we wouldn't have North America, Mexico, and South America. We would still be in Europe.... so yes and no.

He also proved that the world wasn't flat ... as was believed at that time. Big change to global circumnavigation and astronomy.
