I always listen to the Lyrics first, But You have to like the beat too, or the Lyrics will mean nothing.

When I was younger, I would have to say no, since I find myself surprised @ what some of the lyrics actually were to the songs of the 60's & 70's when I hear them agian. I try to understand what's being said in a song to discover all of its creative genious (or not) but I have to admit, the music makes all the difference in the word to a song. Try to find musician's retakes of a particular song or even re-mixes and you will see for yourself what goes into the music alone. A tune can outweight the the desirability of a song's lyrics any day of the week.

It depends on the type of music I'm listening to, but most times I actually to listen to the lyrics.

Initially I'm more concerned with what the musicians are actually doing with their instruments, but I love a good combination of lyrics and musical genius (System of a Down, Incubus)

Lyrics last, melody first. As long as the melody hits me in the "sweet spot", I don't really care what the words are. If the words are great and the melody stinks...I couldn't care less. Tracks that have a great melody and great lyrics are the best.

Actually, I don't tend to pay attention to the lyrics until around the fifth time I hear the song.
