The beginning of a river is called the head of the river. This is a comment to Justanotherengine: Not all rivers flow into the Mighty Mississippi, there is a line that cuts down our continent called the Contiental Divide. This divide stops rivers on the western side of it from draining any where but into the pacific. Everything on the Eastern side drain into the Gulf of Mexico or into the Atlantic Ocean.

The beginning of a river, can be called the "head" or the "source".
Usually it is an underground spring, feeding a lake, or swamp, that is the start of a river.

The "head" is the beginning of a river! The head of the Mississippi is just near Itaska State Park, Minnesota! You can walk accross it! How many people can say they've walked accross the Mississippi? Itaska is a great place to visit and camp. The pine trees are huge and the lakes are loaded with fish! Try it this summer!

Depens on where they start. I've been to the start of the Mississippi River. There is a sigh that states, "This is the start of the Mighty Mississippi." But It looked like a swamp to me.
Where as the start of the Detroit River is Lake St. Clair. I think on the Canidan side you can stand with one leg in the river the other in the lake.

Geographically it's called the "HEAD" of the River.
Physically it's called a "Spring", or "Stream", or "Lake", or "Broken Sewer line" depending on what water source (tributary) is feeding it.
