I think he use to be a closeted bisexual because at one point he was married with a kid, but then he came out in the revolutionary 70's as a gay man. He's gay alright--Sir Elton John married his sweetheart (A MAN) I believe the year before last when it became legal to marry in England---FAbulous!

He is very much gay. He was married to a woman a long time ago but it was before he came out. Some gay men marry women when it's hard for them to come out to society, especially family and friends. He had the whole world to deal with.
