I would say the thing that is most similar to sims, and is free is Second Life
Its supposed to be really great, you should search second life, its free and all you have to do is make a username, and then it will give you a walkthrough when you start playing
Goodluck, hope you like it

For an online approach, the is Gaia online (www.gaiaonline.com), where you can create your own avatar and home, collect items of costume, talk, play games and generally muck around. It's all done through the browser, just like any other website.

If you have a fast internet connection and are prepared to download you may want to try Second Life (www.secondlife.com) or dotsoul (www.dotsoul.net).

You can fully customise your avatar in these, and the basic level of access is free. If you subscibe you can 'buy' land and build your own house - Second-life is pretty much entirely user created and it's getting to the stage you can do almost anything on there.

It doesn't have the task-oriented structure of the sims - you go where you like and do what you like, but it is wonderfully interactive and supremely customisable. The big advantage of dotsoul and second life is that they are both free-roaming 'virtual' worlds.

Second life is currently huge, real-world bands play 'live' gigs there through their characters, you can watch movies, listen to music, even go virtual shopping.

Gaia is easier and runs nicely through the browser, Second Life and the other virtual worlds though are far slicker. Basic access to all of the above is free, though enhanced through subscription or donation.

Try Imvu.com, its like msn but you get your own character. Its free to register and download, but you have to buy credits to buy new clothes and hairstyles and all that.
Have fun.
